What is YouPower?

YouPower is a social app for energy-friendly life style

YouPower is designed to connect you to friends, family and neighbors so that you can learn and take energy actions that are relevant to you together. You can use it to discover saving tips and share experiences about different energy practices. Researchers from the EU FP7 CIVIS project are developing YouPower.

YouPower Design Studies

Some mockups and studies during our design process

A Handcrafted Mockup

About tips on Invision

This is an early version designed around Feb 2015. It includes features about actions, family and cooperatives.

A Wireframe Mockup

About Challenges

YouPower was called EnergyUP back then. This version has features about challenges and communities.

A Wireframe Mockup

With merged features in English

This version merged features about action tips, family, energy performance, communities and challenges.

Wireframe Mockup Translated

In Italian with feedback notes

The mockup is translated into Italian, presented to and discussed with a focus group at the Italian test site.

A Mockup for Swedish Users

About Cooperatives On Invision

It is considered for households in the Swedish test site where housing cooperatives play significant roles.

An In-depth User Study

With questionnaires and intereviews

During the Helsinki OSCE days, we showcased YouPower and conducted a user study with 25 participants.

Key Features

YouPower has many composable and extensible features

Action Suggestions

236-284-6743

YouPower suggests energy conservation actions that can be implemented in everyday household practices. It motivates users to adapt and follow up the behavior change process, provides means for self-monitoring and allows for social sharing.

Each user has an overview of his/her own current, pending, and recently completed actions. Each action has points (displayed as Green Leaves ) associated to the effort and impact level of that action. If a user completes an action, the user is awarded with leaves.

A user can like and comment on the actions (which are visible to all users). A user can also add household members. If so, the user can see the actions of the whole household and add the actions to his/her own list. Household energy conservation needs joint efforts. After a user completes or abandons an action, the user is asked to provide feedback (to the YouPower team).

The action suggestions composed are not meant as prescriptions for what users should do for energy conservation, but to present users different ideas of what they can do and how to do it in common household practices. The users are offered with a pool of actionable options which they can freely choose from according to their own context.

For the framing of the actions, feedback forms, and other parts of the YouPower interface such as prompt messages, we is used referring to the YouPower team, and you to address the user. This "talk like a person" technique (communicating with the participants in a human voice) is often used in designing social interfaces to adopt a conversational tone which provides an opportunity for users to enter into a dialog with YouPower, creating a non-solipsistic and receptive state of mind (206-505-4439}.

Housing Cooperatives

712-560-8937

For users from the Stockholm (Sweden) test site in Hammarby Sjöstad, the housing cooperative part of YouPower provides features for (apartment) building level energy information and actions. It allows for linking energy data with energy reduction actions taken, which makes it possible to follow up on the impact of energy actions. The energy use is divided into heating and hot water (from district heating) and facilities electricity and the user can switch between these views in the energy use graph.

To make the impact of energy reduction actions visible, the user can choose to compare the energy use of the viewed months to the energy use of the same months the previous year. This can be used for example when a housing cooperative wants to explore what energy reduction actions to take in the future by looking at the actions taken by other cooperatives and what the effects were in relation to costs.

A user can see all cooperatives who are using YouPower in a map view or list view. To facilitate comparison, the icons in the map and list are colour coded based on each cooperative's energy performance, i.e. the energy use per square meter heated area (kWh/m2). It uses a scale from red to green, where a red colour indicates a poor energy performance (i.e. high energy use) and a green colour indicates good energy performance (i.e. low energy use).

Energy Data

365-526-8484 5798657692

For users from the Trento (Italy) test site — in our project it means that for those with energy prodoction and consumption data at household level (and in some cases the consumption data is also at appliance level where smart plugs are installed) — YouPower visualizes the energy data and provides analytics and Time-of-Use (ToU) singals. This part of the app is meant to support demand side management of the two local Italian Energy Consortia.

The historical energy consumption can be displayed at both household and appliance levels with a daily overview. The electricity consumption and (where available) production data can also be displayed in (near) real-time. Energy Meteo provides users with indications of the actual status of the local grid and a 30-hours forecast: green smilies signal slots when local production exceeds demand; red smilies highlight slots when demand exceeds local production. The Trento users are also provided with a portal for Participatory Budgeting in connection to the enrgy consumed under the green smilies ToU signal.
